The serial number consists of five numbers and three characters and is printed in red. On the lower left of the note only the number is printed. On the upper right the number and characters are printed. The first character is a capital, the second a lower case and the third one is a capital again. The second character is always a “c” except in the character combination “PeA”, where it is an “e”.

Examining 91 banknotes of this type led to a further subdivision into several printing plates where each of the notes originates to.

Printing plate A:

A

This plate carries a specific damage that can be easily identified with a magnifier. It concerns a vertical stripe of around 4mm length that has transferred no ink to the paper. It is located in the oval ornament with the portrait of Soekarno. The stripe is situated near the edge in the middle on the left side of the lattice. The distance between the edge and the stripe is precisely 4 squares in the lattice. Eleven of the examined notes match this deviation.

Printing plate B:

B

This plate also carries a specific damage that can be easily identified with a magnifier. It concerns a vertical stripe of around 5mm length nthat has transferred no ink to the paper. It is located in the oval ornament with the portrait of Soekarno. The stripe is situated near the edge in the middle on the left side of the lattice. The distance between the edge and the stripe is precisely 3 squares in the lattice. Six of the examined notes match this deviation.

Printing plate C:

C

This plate carries a specific error that can be easily identified with a magnifier. It concerns a dot of around 1mm diameter that is clearly printed on the paper. On the obverse of the note (just left from the middle)  there is a picture of two palm trees and two working peasants. At the origin of the palm trees there is lower vegetation. In the imaginary extension of the third leave from the left, the dot is located approximately 3mm above the leave. Thirteen of the examined notes match this deviation.

Printing plate D:

D

This plate carries specific damages to the plate and characteristics in the type style of the letters in the legal notice and the signature texts on the obverse. It concerns a vertical stripe of around 7mm that has transferred no ink to the paper. It is located in the oval ornament with the portrait of Soekarno. The stripe is situated in the middle of the right shoulder of Soekarno and points down a little to the left through the stripes of his suit.  The type style characteristic can most clearly be seen in the last word of the legal notes “SOEMATRA.”. The characters “OEMA” are higher then the “S”. Next the “T”, “R” and “A” are each lower then the previous charater, resulting in a “wave” appearance of the word.  Another clear indication for this printing plate is the word “SOEMATERA” in the right lower signature box, where the “S” is definitely larger and situated lower then the rest of the characters of the word. Nineteen of the examined notes match this deviation.

Printing plate E:

E

This plate carries specific characteristics in the type style of the letters in the text of the left lower signature box on the obverse. There is the abbreviation for “Pematang” printed “PEM.”. The character “M” looks slightly tilted and the right leg of the “M” is a little short. There is a “. “ right behind the “M”. Also the  "31" in the date shows a line on top before the "3" and after the "1". Besides this it does not carry any of the specifics of the other printing plate’s characteristics. Fourteen of the examined notes match this deviation.  One of the notes  might be a  forgerie;  the  serial number is printed  with wider characters and there  is  red ink spoiled  above the serial  number that does not occur on any of the other notes.

Printing plate F:

F notF

This plate carries specific characteristics in the type style of the letters in the text of the left and right lower signature boxes on the obverse. There is the abbreviation for “Pematang” printed “PEM”. The character “M” looks slightly tilted and the right leg of the “M” is a little short. There is no “.” behind the “M”. Furthermore the character “J” in the word “DJABATAN” in the right signature box is printed like an “I” in stead of an “J”. Besides this it does not carry any of the specifics of the other printing plate’s characteristics. Eleven of the examined notes match this deviation.

Printing plate G:

This plate shows specific characteristics in the type style of the letters in the text of the legal notice at the lower center of the obverse and the right lower signature box. The word "SOEMATRA" in the legal notice has a last character "A" that is slightly larger and printed lower than the rest of the word. The word "SOEMATERA" in the right signature box has a last character "A" of which the right leg is clearly longer than the left one. These characteristics do not occur together on any other printing plate. Four of the examined noted match this variety.

During the determination process I identified another 4 notes that are likely to be forgeries. So 9 more notes to determine......

 Type 3:

 H770type3

The serial number consists of six numbers and three characters and is printed in red. The serial number is printed on the lower left and the upper right of the note. The first and second characters are capitals, the third character is in lower case and is always a “b”.

This note has only been observed with a first character "V", "X", "Y" or "Z".
