During the Dutch colonial rule in the Netherlands Indies, Membang
Moeda was one of many large rubber plantations, occupying an area of
3.104 ha..
It was owned by the Dutch "NV Rubber Cultuur-Mij. Amsterdam" and produced approximately 1.3 million kilo's of rubber in 1938.
Membang
Moeda was situated about 50 km south of the city of Kisiran, in the
administrative division Asahan, district of Laboehan Batoe, subdistrict
Koealoeh Leidong, part of the Sumatra East Coast residency (Sumatera
Timor). Membang Moeda was connected to the Deli
railroad and had it's own railway station. The Deli Railroad Company
started in 1883 with building a railroad from Laboehan Deli to Belawan.
Step by step the railroad was extended throughtout the residency and
the last trajectory from Kisiran to Rantauprapat was finished in 1937,
connecting Membang Moeda to the network.
After the Japanse
occupation of the Netherlands Indies, the Memban Moeda area was never
re-gained by the Dutch troops. Actually the local population took
matters in their own hands and even removed the native rulers
(a.o. Sultan Tengku Mansur Shah) from power during the so-called
"social revolution" in 1946.
Neither
the Dutch nor the new
Indonesian government were able to establish their rule
throughout the island, leaving the Asahan region in
an isolated situation. During the revolution period from 1945
-1949, the Asahan region had to be selfsufficient and as a consequence,
several local authorities issued their own money in order to
keep their local economy going.
Between 1947 and 1948, subdistrict Koealoeh Leidong issued it's own paper money in Membang Moeda.
The
first issue of notes in 1947 were signed by the "BAH. Keoeangan" the
subdistrict's financial officer whose name is yet unknown and the
"WEDANA KL. LEDONG" the subdistrict's officer (Dutch: controleur) Mr.
M. Sarijan. On october 17, 1945 the "Komite Nasional Daerah
Labuhanbatu" was founded and Mr. M. Sarijan was an honorary party
member since the beginning. Currently a street (Indonesian: Jalan) is
named after him in the nearby city of Rantauprapat. The first three
denominations (50,100 and 250 Roepiah) spell "KL. LEDONG" and the
fourth denomination spells "K/ LEIDONG". All four denominations spell
"MOEDA"with "OE".
During the subsequent issues of 1948, the Indonesian spelling gradually changes from "OE" to "U".
